From a house to a home: Michael’s story at The Maples

The Maples, in the heart of the Yorkshire village of Cottingham near Hull, is one of our specialised supported housing assets. Formerly a nursing home, today it is a place many people proudly call home.

Michael has lived at The Maples for the past five years. Before moving here, he was in shared accommodation where he struggled to settle, but since coming to The Maples, Michael has truly flourished.

He has a wide range of interests that bring him joy and a strong sense of purpose. He is an enthusiastic collector of clocks and toy cars, a keen football fan, and has developed a real passion for gardening. He particularly loves spending time in his greenhouse and takes great pride in the plants he grows. Michael has also added his own personal touch to the communal garden by collecting gnomes to brighten the space, making sure they are always well cared for.

Over time, Michael’s confidence has grown significantly. This has led him to take on a valued role in the local community, where he now volunteers once a week at the local day care centre, supporting their gardening club.

Stories like Michael’s show the positive difference that quality supported housing can make. A secure, well-maintained home gives people the stability they need to build their confidence, pursue their interests, and play an active part in their community.
